Studio Policy
Payment: Payment is made no later than on the first lesson of each calendar month. Payment can be made through all major credit cards (online or swipe in-person), debit cards, cash or check. A quick, secure alternative is to use the “Square Cash” app downloadable in the Google Play Store or Apple App Market. Square Cash can link with debit or credit cards.
Lesson Duration: Lessons are a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of usually 60 minutes. Pre-school-aged students would usually start with 30 minutes (possibly twice per week). When a student gets to middle elementary grades, consideration is given to having one 45-minute lesson per week. Middle- and high-school-aged students and adults may be taught up to one hour per lesson. The teacher will recommend (based on what is best for the student’s education) what the lesson duration should be.
Frequency of Lessons: Teaching sessions are standardly expected to be done no less than once per week. In some cases, an every-other-week frequency may be agreed upon. It may be best to hold lessons twice per week for pre-school and early-elementary-aged students. The teacher will recommend what is best (based on specific factors) with regard to the frequency of lessons.
Requirement to Practice: Practice is essential to a student’s progress and enjoyment in learning music. Thus, it is expected that students (or parents) will do their best to enact a regular and reasonable weekly practice schedule that is well-communicated with the teacher. It is understood that this can be a challenge with ups and downs. However, this is something to consistently endeavor to keep regular. The teacher will inform students and parents of a reasonable expectation of practice.
Requirement to Participate in Certificate of Merit: Participation in the Certificate of Merit program is strongly encouraged while taking piano lessons. This is so a student can get the full education and enjoyment out of invested efforts and funds to learn piano.
Requirement to Participate in Recitals: Similarly, participation in at least one yearly recital is strongly encouraged. We understand that many students and adults might cringe at the idea. However, learning music is not primarily an issue of learning facts and technique. Through music, we develop our own character when we share what we learn. The student is required to pay entrance fees for participation in Certificate of Merit and recitals.
Book Purchases: The teacher will recommend what type of books will be useful for you to learn piano. As a student progresses, supplementary repertoire and theory books will be needed. It is expected that students will purchase books that are necessary for learning.
Tuition Increases: Tuition fees are scheduled to increase yearly at the beginning of a new academic year (September).
Postponements and “Make-Ups”: 24-hour notification is required for the possibility of a lesson “make-up”. If notice is given less than 24 hours, the lesson time and payment is assumed to be forfeited by the student for that scheduled lesson.
For lesson postponements with more than 24-hour notice, a “make-up” piano lesson should be scheduled within 14 days of the original date and time of the lesson needing to be rescheduled. Make-up piano lessons should not affect the normally scheduled lessons for ensuing weeks. After 14 days, if no make-up lesson could be performed, the option for a make-up and the paid for time will be considered forfeited by the student. Refunds are not given for lessons.
In the event that the teacher is the one to initiate a postponement or missing of a lesson, the teacher will offer to the student to perform a make-up piano lesson at a day and time agreed upon with the student. The student will have a permanent credit for the piano lesson that will not expire.
